Anna-Sophie Maass
IUEU Centre 2008 PhD Scholarship Holder at la trobe University

PhD Topic:
The difficult partnership: EU-Russia Relations from Courtship to Confrontation, 1998-2008.
My name is Anna-Sophie Maass; I am from Germany and started my PhD at the IUEU in October 2008. While I was studying at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, I saw an advertisement for the IUEU scholarship. It especially encouraged students interested in Eastern Europe or Russia to apply. I was already researching EU-Russia relations when I saw this announcement.
Before my PhD, I enrolled in an interdisciplinary Bachelor programme, “European Studies”, at Maastricht University, which analyses the European integration process from various viewpoints. During the Bachelor I studied for one semester at the “Institut d’etudes politiques de Rennes” in France, from which I graduated in international public law, international migration, political science and political philosophy. In the Masters at Maastricht, I specialised in “European international politics”, a curriculum which analyses the EU as an international actor. My Master’s thesis examined EU-Russian energy policy during the Putin era.
Under the supervision of Dr Stefan Auer and Dr Robert Horvath, my PhD thesis investigates the reasons for the deterioration in EU-Russia relations from 1997 until 2007. My work is challenging in the regard that my research depends on primary sources, which are to a large extent published in Russian. My PhD gives me the opportunity to learn Russian in order to improve my research skills. During my candidature my horizon broadens due to my research, frequent discussions with my supervisors and by gaining interesting experiences from living in a multi-cultural environment.
After my PhD, I would consider working as a research fellow at a university or at the EU Institute for Security Studies due to my interest in the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy. Other options include working in an international think tank or in the International Energy Agency to deal with solutions to current problems in foreign policy.
