The aim of this thesis is to offer a better understanding of the contemporary extreme right and of its consequences on politics in western democracies. The empirical part of this research will be a comparative study of the French and the Australian extreme right in order to draw similarities and differences that will eventually give a clearer view of the situation.
Research interest:
- The Extreme-Right
- Fascist ideology
- Populist ideology and strategy
- The Russian revolutionary movements
- The Second World War
- Ideologies of the twentieth century
2008 progress update:
After twelve months of research, my PhD seems to be taking a new turn. Indeed, I believe that most of my theoretical research is over and I will thus move to the more practical part of the thesis. What I have concentrated on so far in the first two chapters of my thesis is a thorough analysis of the ideologies and concepts that will be crucial to the rest of my research.
I have also continued teaching in the French department where I was offered to become coordinator of the third-year course.
Finally, I have given papers in conferences in Melbourne, notably the ERAS symposium on 1968 that took place on the 8th of February 2008 and I am currently awaiting for the confirmation of publication for one article in the Journal for Contemporary European Studies (JCES). A translation of Alain Badiou has also been accepted by Angelaki and should be published at the end of the year.
Publications:
‘Cinema as a Democratic Emblem’, Alain Badiou, Translated by Alex Ling and Aurélien Mondon, Angelaki (forthcoming)
‘Populist Radical-Right’ or Fascist Extreme-Right’, Journal for Contemporary European Studies (JCES) (awaiting approval)
